Publication of ACIITC Submission to the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety
In August 2019, The Aged Care Industry Information Technology Council (ACIITC) tabled a submission to The Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety.
ACIITC submission focused on the role innovation and technology can play in improving the quality and safety of Aged Care in Australia.
The ACIITC submission is informed by the Technology Roadmap for Aged Care in Australia and its underpinning research and consultation base. The submission is structured around several key issues affecting the quality of aged care, and the under-utilised contribution to be made by technology in addressing them. In turn, these have been grouped into two themes (1) technology-enhanced quality of care provision (2) technology infrastructure underpinning care provision and business operations.
The ACIITC vision is for technology and innovation to be embedded features of aged care operations and services, rather than an after-thought. Aged care organisations need to provide leadership on fit-for-purpose technology and innovation that supports quality care, greater consumer participation and direction of their care and support, safety and more effective and efficient service delivery.
Since our submission in August, the Royal Commission requested a witness statement from ACIITC Chair, Dr George Margelis which focused on the role technology and innovation can play to improve the Aged and Community Care workforce.
During the 14 – 18 October 2019 Aged Care Workforce hearing (held in Melbourne) inquiring into the aged care workforce, with a focus on how to enhance capacity and how to make the aged care sector a more attractive and rewarding place to work, Dr George Margelis statement was submitted into evidence.
Dr George Margelis hopes “ACIITC submission will showcase ways to improve the quality and safety of Aged Care with the use of innovation and technology, especially since there has been very little mention of technology so far in the Royal Commission”.
On 1 November 2019, the next meeting of the Aged Care Industry Information Technology Council (ACIITC) National Home Care Group and CIO Forum will be held in Canberra. The meeting will provide an overview of ACIITC Royal Commission submission, launch an evidence-based report for the sector to consider and provide future technology and innovation direction for the industry.
